Ricci was first recognized and celebrated as a young actor, primarily for her roles in the role of Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (2000) and Kat Harvey as seen in Casper (1995). Ricci's transition to adult roles began with The Ice Storm in 1997 The Ice Storm it was followed by her critically acclaimed performance as The Opposite of Sex in 1998. For this performance, Ricci won a Golden Globe nod for Best Actress. After Sleepy Hollow in 1999 and Monster 2003 she continued to experience success.
